This is the first article of our new Series: From Zero to WordPress Rockstar in which we will install WordPress on our webhost in a couple of minutes.
WordPress is one of the easiest web scripts to install and in this article I’ll show you it’s only a matter of minutes. However, what we will do here is just a really basic install of WordPress on our webspace, if you want to have know more about WordPress, you should read my article The ultimate WordPress beginners guide.
Before you dive into this, you probably want to check if your web hosting service has a one-click installation support for WordPress as a lot of web hosts have this option available. If not, don’t worry – it’s a really easy and fast process and if you follow me now, your WordPress installation will be ready in some minutes.
Before we start, you need to make sure you have these two things ready:
Step 1: Configuring WordPress
In older Versions of WordPress we had to manually create a wp-config.php and insert our database details. Now this isn’t necessary anymore. Just upload all unzipped wordpress files and visit your domain. You should be greeted with a message like this.
Just as you can read there, WordPress is not always able to create the config.php file. So we’ll just try and hit Create a Configuration File. Don’t worry if this will work or not, if it didn’t work we just make this file ourselves, as this can happen with some server configurations.
Step 2: Installing WordPress
You now should face the welcome screen of the WordPress installation as you can see in the screenshot to the right. Basically it just tells you what you need to do in the next minute to install WordPress and just like I wrote above, that you will need to create a wp-config.php file by hand if WordPress can’t do it automatically. Let’s hit the Let’s go button and get WordPress installed!
You will now be required to insert your database details and if you have multiple WordPress installations within one database you will need to change the table prefix. Note that this is not required if you have multiple WordPress installations on your webserver but too use multiple databases.
When your database details where correct, WordPress will let you run the installation process, so hit the button Run the install which you will see in the next screen. If everything was correct, WordPress now creates the wp-config.php file. If it could not create that file because of some server configuration, you will have to create this file by hand. If you are not exactly sure how to do this, please refer to my article The ultimate WordPress beginners guide.
Alright, now you should see a screen like on the screenshot to the right. Here you will have to insert some details for your new WordPress site. For security reasons i recommend not to use the username admin and – as with every password – choose a strong and unique one! Hit the button on the bottom and WordPress will tell you the awesome news that we are already done. You now can see your fresh WordPress installation when you go to your domain, and you can log in into the admin area when going to http://wwww.example.com/wp-admin.
If you liked this really short and straight forward tutorial, please share it on twitter, facebook, SU or +1 it in the floating bar on the left to let others too know.
