WordPress themeThis is the third article of our  Series: From Zero to WordPress Rockstar where we will customize our site with new plugins and a fresh look.

Why you should customize your WordPress site

WordPress comes with a lot of functionality and with a pretty good looking theme, so why should you customize it you may ask? Well, you should get a theme so your site doesn’t look like thousand of other sites out there. By doing this you are building your “brand” which in this case is your website and people will recognize it.

Even if a standard WordPress installation has a lot of functionality and basically everything you need to start a blog, you can do so much more with the right plugins or make your site better.

Get a new theme

You here have basically three different ways to make your blog more unique.

  • Get a free Theme – This is already a good way to go. There are thousands of free WordPress Themes out there which you can find on WordPress.org. Be carefully here and please read my article Why you should not search for free WordPress themes on google
  • Get a Premium WordPress Theme – Another way is to get a so called premium WordPress Theme. They do cost money but are of high quality and makes your blog more unique than getting a free theme.
  • Build your own WordPress Theme – If you can do some web-design it should not be hard for you to develop your own theme. If you aren’t a designer you can outsource this and hire a designer to do this for you. While this can cost quite some money, in my opinion it is worth it as you will get a really unique design.

Get some nice plugins

WordPress counts thousands of plugins. A lot of them are free and installed within a minute. Some while ago I already wrote some posts where I mentioned some important plugins. You probably want to offer your readers different things then I do, or you need different functionality so I can only recommend you some really useful general plugins. Most available WordPress plugins can be found over at WordPress.org

I recommend you reading my other posts on WordPress plugins where I already reviewed the plugins i use, so let me link you to them:
