If you own a WordPress blog chances are you want to install a custom theme. Most of you will probably want a free theme to start and you will look for free wordpress themes at wordpress.org. A major drawback of the wordpress.org themebase is thats it’s not easy to find a theme, and the quality of themes is most of the time not really good.

A way to still find a good and free theme is by entering something like “free wordpress themes” into your search engine of joice (google, bing, yahoo, you name it). And i will now tell you why this is a really bad idea.

What is WordPress?

what is wordpress? To my surprise I receive this question quite often: What is WordPress?

A few years back when the first versions of WordPress where released, this answer was quite simple: A blogging software. Today the answer is not that simple, as WordPress has evolved and now is much more than “just” a blogging software.

First we have to make clear what we are talking about, as we basically have two different “versions” of WordPress:

  • WordPress.com – A service for the hosted version of the WordPress software similar to Blogger.
  • WordPress.org – The WordPress software itself; Installable on your own webspace/server.

When I write about “Wordpress”, I almost all the time refer to the WordPress.org software itself and not to the hosted WordPress.com version. If I write about the hosted version I rather will write WordPress.com instead of just WordPress.

Welcome to the second article in our new article series “Series: WordPress – Themes – Plugins”. This whole post is about WordPress themes and designs. If you want to give your blog a different look and feel, keep reading!

Making your own WordPress design

WordPress is built in a way that makes it very easy for everyone to create their own template.
So if you are a designer, or know a designer, or you are good with Photoshop or The Gimp (or whatever graphics program you use), i would always recommend to make your own design. This gives your blog some uniqueness and your visitors will remember you more likely than a blog with the standard WordPress theme.
